GNU Zealand

New Excelsior Hostel - Christchurch, New Zealand

It was been a long day. We got up at 04:00 in Cairns, Australia. Almost twenty four hours later we are just making up our beds in Christchurch, New Zealand. In between the two, we spent a few hours taking in the sites of Sydney. There was free wireless internet at the end of this road, and that makes the journey so much easier to bear.

Welcome to Godzone! If you haven't planned on as much already, I *heartily* reccommend a trip to Waitomo on the North Island to do some adventure caving. The Lost World/Haggis Honking Holes and a trip to the Waitomo Pub were two of the highlights of my stint in NZ writing for Let's Go and well worth the cost.

Where else are you headed? I can suggest other good spots-- including a treehouse hostel with towel warmers and a homestay with its own brewery.

Happy travels!

Sounds cool, but we may be short on time. Most of our stay will probably be spent on the South Island. We've only got two weeks left, and we're only in Queenstown.

Uh... After a few bridge-jumping days in Queenstown, probably north to Picton (although we may make a detour to Milford Sound), then Wellington. After that, we need to make our way up to Auckland to catch our flight.

Selah, they're all on the North Island, but if you're headed out of Auckland, try to spare at least a few days for that part of the world. I know the South Island has glaciers and fjords and penguins and waves of wheat, but don't forget that the north sports black-sand beaches, white-sand beaches, temperate rainforests, snorkeling, thermal pools, a casino and THESE FINE ESTABLISHMENTS:

* The Flying Fox: Homestay and campground with brewery, accessible by canoe, river taxi or riding up with the mailman
*The Treehouse Hostel: Farm-fresh eggs, its own orchards, and yes, heated towel racks
*Gruesome Twosome: Two of the best run adventure cave tours on the planet

Enjoy! Wish I were there, 'stead of flying this armored desk, so drink to me, OK?

Thanks for the advice. The Waitomo Caves look pretty frikkin' cool, and they're right on our way to Auckland. Things are lookin' up for goin' down.
